Service Agency: Collier County Parks/Friends of Barefoot Beach Preserve
Task: ‘Gopher Tortoise protection’ 2015
You also need to bring this Collier County VOLUNTEER APPLICATION with you.
Summer 2015 project goals:
1.. Remove remaining ragweed from around ‘Gopher Tortoise condominium’ at the southwest end of parking lot 2.
2. Carefully prune back brush and sea- grapes in the area between the Gopher tortoise mound, the beach boardwalk, and parking lot 2. This will encourage Gophers to enter areas that are off-limits to humans, and provide more forage for them.
3. Leave brushy and undisturbed areas near parking lot, boardwalk and other areas so that the work is less visible to visitors. This is to lessen the likelihood that humans might be enticed to enter areas they are not allowed.
4. Rake up sea-grape leave blanket to encourage growth of small herbaceous plants.
5. Place brush in compact piles located in such a was as to prevent humans from entering the areas.
